Learning to Know the God Who Was Before and Will Be After

Before You Were Here
There’s something about standing at the edge of a vast landscape that adjusts your perspective.
I remember standing near the Ozarks as a young man, looking across water that felt endless at the time. Later in life, standing in the high elevation outside Mexico City, looking at mountains that seemed older than memory itself. You feel small — not insignificant — but temporary.
As a boy, life feels long.
As a man, you realize how quickly it moves.
People come into your life.
People leave.
Leaders rise.
Leaders fall.
You bury parents.
You watch your children grow.
Time does not slow down for anyone.
And eventually you ask:
What existed before all this?
And what will remain after?
Who God Is: From Everlasting to Everlasting
Psalm 90 does not argue for God’s eternity. It declares it.
From everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
Before mountains.
Before oceans.
Before nations.
Before you.
God did not begin.
He was not formed.
He did not develop.
He is.
Eternal does not simply mean “lasting a long time.” It means existing outside of time. Not aging. Not diminishing. Not approaching expiration.
Everything we know operates within clocks and calendars.
God does not.
And in Christ, eternity stepped into time.
Jesus was born in history — under Roman authority, in a specific place, at a measurable moment — yet He declares, “Before Abraham was, I am.”
That is eternity speaking inside time.
To know God is to know that the One walking with you today is not limited to your timeline.
Grace Before Action
If God were eternal but distant, eternity would intimidate us.
But Scripture shows something remarkable.
The eternal God entered our temporary world.
He stepped into our years, our limits, our mortality. He took on flesh, walked dusty roads, experienced hunger, fatigue, rejection — and then conquered death itself.
Eternity is not abstract philosophy.
It has a name: Jesus.
Because God is eternal, His promises do not expire.
Because God is eternal, His mercy is not seasonal.
Because God is eternal, your story is not confined to your present struggle.
We do not build permanence through our effort.
We trust the One who already is.
What Eternal Looks Like in Real Life
An eternal God reshapes urgency.
It looks like:
- Making decisions with long-term faithfulness in mind
- Refusing panic over temporary setbacks
- Investing in what outlasts applause
- Measuring success by obedience, not speed
Eternity teaches patience.
It teaches perspective.
It teaches us that the seasons we think are permanent are not.
God sees beginning and end at once.
We see only the present.
Knowing Him changes how we endure.
This Week’s Training
This week is not about slowing down time.
It is about living in light of eternity.
- Identify one temporary pressure that feels overwhelming right now.
- Speak this truth aloud: “From everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”
- Take one step that reflects long-term obedience instead of short-term reaction.
Eternity does not rush.
It remains.
Closing Reflection
God is eternal.
Before your first breath.
After your last.
Beyond every generation.
In Jesus, eternity stepped into history so that history would not define the end of your story.
To know God is to anchor your life to One who is not bound by time.
When you walk with Him, you are not walking toward uncertainty.
You are walking with the One who already stands at the end.
And that steadies the present.
