Listening Before Leading

Learning Wisdom and Restraint from Josiah’s Early Reign

Opening Scripture

“Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I have spoken… I have heard you,” declares the Lord.
2 Kings 22:19

“Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years.”
2 Kings 22:1

Section 1 — The Real-Life Tension

There comes a moment when responsibility shows up earlier than expected.

You are given influence before you feel ready.
People begin to watch your decisions.
Your choices start affecting others, not just yourself.

For teenagers, this tension appears in subtle ways:
Being looked to as an example.
Being trusted with leadership.
Being expected to act mature before you feel confident.

The pressure is quiet but real. Do you rush forward to prove yourself, or do you slow down and learn first?

Section 2 — What God Is Like Here

Josiah became king at eight years old. He inherited a broken nation shaped by years of idolatry and neglect. Yet Scripture does not describe God as impatient with Josiah’s youth.

God is patient.
God is attentive.
God responds to humility.

When the Book of the Law was discovered and read to Josiah, God did not rebuke him for what he did not know. God honored his response. Josiah listened, humbled himself, and sought truth.

This shows us God’s heart. He is not impressed by early authority or quick action. He is drawn to hearts that are teachable and responsive.

Section 3 — Grace Before Action

Josiah did not reform the nation to earn God’s favor.

He acted because God’s Word had already reached his heart.

Grace always moves first. It awakens humility before it calls for action. It creates space to listen before demanding leadership.

When grace leads, obedience becomes a response, not a performance. Josiah’s reforms flowed from reverence, not pressure.

Section 4 — What This Looks Like in Real Life

For teens today, listening before leading looks like:
Paying attention before speaking.
Learning from correction instead of resisting it.
Letting Scripture shape decisions instead of emotion or popularity.
Choosing patience when recognition feels urgent.

Grace allows you to grow without rushing.
Wisdom forms quietly before it shows publicly.

You do not have to lead loudly to lead well.

Section 5 — This Week’s Training

This Week’s Training

  1. Reflection
Where might God be inviting me to listen more carefully instead of acting quickly?
  2. Truth Statement
God’s grace teaches me before it sends me forward.
  3. Action Step
This week, pause before one decision and intentionally seek God’s Word or wise counsel before responding.

This is practice, not performance.

Closing Reflection

God honors humility before He entrusts influence.

Josiah’s strength was not in his age or authority, but in his willingness to listen and respond. Grace shaped his leadership before action ever followed.

You are not behind if you are still learning.
You are being formed.
