Learning Strength, Humility, and Grace from Rehoboam
Opening Scripture
“Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.”
Proverbs 13:10
“So the king rejected the advice the elders gave him and followed the counsel of the young men.”
1 Kings 12:13
Section 1 — The Real-Life Tension
There is a moment most teenagers face sooner or later.
You are finally old enough to have a voice.
Strong enough to push back.
Confident enough to say, “I’ve got this.”
Advice starts to feel like interference.
Correction feels like disrespect.
Listening feels like weakness.
Sometimes the pressure is internal. You want to prove you are capable. Other times it comes from peers who reward confidence but quietly mock restraint.
The tension is real.
Do you listen, or do you prove yourself?
Section 2 — What God Is Like Here
Rehoboam inherited a kingdom, but he did not inherit wisdom.
When he became king, the people asked him to ease the heavy burden his father Solomon had placed on them. Rehoboam did something wise at first. He asked for counsel.
The older men, shaped by years of leadership and loss, urged him toward restraint and mercy. They understood the weight of authority.
God was not silent in this moment.
God’s wisdom was available.
God’s heart leaned toward humility and care.
God often speaks through patience, experience, and steady counsel. His wisdom is not rushed, loud, or self-protective.
Section 3 — Grace Before Action
Rehoboam did not lose the kingdom because he lacked power.
He lost it because he refused grace.
Grace invites us to listen before we act.
Grace slows us down when pride urges speed.
Grace reminds us we do not have to prove ourselves.
Obedience does not begin with strength.
It begins with humility.
Rehoboam chose the advice that affirmed his ego instead of the counsel that would have formed his character. Grace was offered, but pride closed his ears.
Section 4 — What This Looks Like in Real Life
For teens today, pride often sounds like confidence.
It shows up when:
You ignore advice because it feels outdated.
You reject correction because it feels personal.
You choose voices that agree with you instead of those who challenge you.
Grace does not shame you for needing guidance.
Grace reminds you that wisdom is learned, not inherited.
Listening does not make you weak.
It makes you teachable.
God often protects us by placing wisdom outside of us.
Section 5 — This Week’s Training
This Week’s Training
- Reflection
Who do I listen to when decisions matter, and why? - Truth Statement
God’s grace invites me to humility before it leads me to action. - Action Step
This week, intentionally seek counsel from someone older or wiser before making one meaningful decision.
This is practice, not performance.
Closing Reflection
God does not oppose strength.
He opposes pride that refuses wisdom.
Grace does not strip authority.
It forms it.
Rehoboam’s story reminds us that leadership without humility fractures what strength was meant to protect. God offers wisdom freely, not to control us, but to keep us from unnecessary loss.
You do not have to prove yourself.
You are invited to be formed.
