Sow Generously, Trust God with the Harvest

“Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let your hands not be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well.”
— Ecclesiastes 11:6

Planting a seed is always an act of faith. You push it into the soil, cover it, water it, and wait. But no matter how carefully you prepare, you can’t control whether that seed will actually grow. That’s the heart of Solomon’s wisdom in Ecclesiastes 11:6: keep sowing, keep working, and trust God with the harvest.

Sowing Beyond the Field

Most of us aren’t farmers, but we all sow seeds every day. A kind word, a prayer, a moment of generosity, a conversation about faith — each one is a seed. Some take root quickly. Others may lie hidden in the soil for years before they grow. And some may never sprout at all.

That’s why Solomon urges us not to hold back. Don’t plant just one seed and call it a day. Don’t quit after one effort doesn’t seem to work. Keep sowing, in the morning and in the evening, with open hands and a faithful heart.

Why Keep Sowing?

Because the results aren’t up to us. They’re up to God.

Paul echoes Solomon’s wisdom in Galatians 6:9: “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

That means every act of kindness, every prayer, every faithful choice matters. Even when it feels unseen or unappreciated, God sees. Even when you don’t notice the impact, God is at work beneath the surface.

When You Feel Weary

We all know the struggle of sowing without seeing results. Maybe you’ve invested in a friendship, prayed for someone, or poured into your family, and it feels like nothing is changing. That’s when the temptation comes to give up.

But remember: farmers don’t pull up their seeds to see if they’re growing. They wait. They trust. They keep tending the field. And so must we.

One Seed at a Time

Here’s a simple challenge: identify one seed you can sow this week. Maybe it’s calling a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while. Maybe it’s encouraging your spouse, praying with your kids, or helping a neighbor.

It doesn’t have to be big. Just faithful.

Because here’s the truth: you can’t control the harvest, but you can control your sowing. Some seeds may grow, some may not — but God is honored by your faithfulness. And over time, you’ll see that what you sow in love never goes to waste.

A Declaration for Us All

Say it with me:
“I will sow faithfully and trust God with the harvest.”

Let’s live that out — one seed at a time.

Manly Application: Seeds Worth Planting

Here are a few reflection questions you can take to heart — and even discuss with your family, small group, or friends:

  1. What seeds am I sowing right now in my family? Am I encouraging, leading with faith, and modeling integrity?
  2. Where have I grown weary in doing good? What area of my life needs renewed faithfulness?
  3. What’s one seed I can intentionally sow this week? A phone call, a prayer, an act of service, or a word of encouragement.

Remember, the harvest may not come immediately — but it will come in God’s time.
