Security Reduces Stress When You Know Who Is Leading You
Opening Scripture
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
— Psalm 23:1
When You Don’t Know Who’s Leading
I remember seasons in my life when everything felt uncertain.
Transitions in work.
Pressure at home.
Responsibilities stacking up.
There were moments where I felt like I was carrying everything myself.
Trying to figure it out.
Trying to control outcomes.
Trying to make sure nothing fell apart.
And the weight of that builds quickly.
Because when you feel like everything depends on you, stress becomes constant.
It doesn’t shut off.
It follows you into your thoughts, your decisions, even your sleep.
But Scripture gives us a very different picture.
Psalm 23 does not describe a man leading himself.
It describes a man being led.
“The Lord is my shepherd…”
That changes everything.
Who God Is: The Shepherd Who Leads
A shepherd is responsible for everything.
Direction
Protection
Provision
Sheep don’t carry the burden of the path.
The shepherd does.
When David wrote Psalm 23, he wasn’t writing theory.
He had been a shepherd.
He understood something most people miss:
Sheep are not designed to lead themselves.
And neither are we.
When we try to carry what was never ours to carry, stress increases.
But when we understand who God is, something shifts.
God is not distant.
He is not passive.
He is not observing from far away.
He leads.
Jesus Revealed as Shepherd
Throughout Scripture, we see Jesus in different forms.
In Psalm 23, we see Him as Shepherd.
In the New Testament, Jesus makes it clear:
“I am the good shepherd.” — John 10:11
He leads.
He knows His people.
He lays down His life for them.
Jesus does not drive His people with pressure.
He leads them with clarity.
And when you know who is leading you, something changes inside you.
Grace Before Action
You are not called to lead your life alone.
You are not responsible for carrying everything.
Grace means this:
You are led before you act.
God does not say, “Figure it out.”
He says, “Follow Me.”
Stress grows when we assume responsibility for things God has already taken ownership of.
Grace releases that weight.
Not by removing responsibility.
But by restoring order.
God leads.
We follow.
Why This Matters in a Stressed World
Life in 2026 has created a dangerous pattern.
People are overloaded with decisions.
Constant choices.
Constant pressure.
Constant responsibility.
And over time, many begin to believe:
“It all depends on me.”
That belief produces stress.
Because you were never designed to carry that role.
Psalm 23 reminds us:
You are not alone.
You are not self-directed.
You are not without guidance.
You are led.
And when that truth becomes real, something happens:
Security replaces anxiety.
Not because life becomes easy.
But because you are no longer carrying what was never yours.
What Following the Shepherd Looks Like
It looks like:
Pausing before making decisions
Seeking God before reacting
Trusting direction even when you don’t see the full path
Letting go of the need to control outcomes
It is not passive.
It is aligned.
This Week’s Training
Identify one area where you feel overwhelmed Ask: Am I trying to lead this, or follow God in this? Surrender control and ask for direction
Security grows when leadership is clear.
Closing Reflection
God is our Shepherd.
He leads.
He provides.
He protects.
In Jesus, we see a Shepherd who does not abandon His people.
He walks with them.
To know God is to know you are not alone.
And when you understand who is leading you, stress begins to lose its grip.
