Big Picture
1 Samuel 2–4 introduces a major transition in Israel’s story.
Hannah begins with a powerful prayer of praise in chapter 2. Her prayer celebrates God’s character—He lifts the humble, humbles the proud, and ultimately directs the course of history.
At the same time, the priest Eli’s sons abuse their position in the temple. Instead of serving faithfully, they treat their responsibilities with contempt. Their corruption spreads spiritual confusion among the people.
In contrast, the young boy Samuel quietly grows in faith and service before the Lord.
Then in chapter 3 something remarkable happens.
God calls Samuel during the night. At first Samuel thinks Eli is calling him, but eventually Eli realizes what is happening and tells Samuel how to respond.
Samuel answers with the words:
“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”
This moment marks the beginning of Samuel’s prophetic ministry.
Chapter 4 then shows a painful lesson for Israel. The people attempt to use the Ark of the Covenant as if it were a good luck object in battle. Instead of seeking the Lord, they try to control the outcome.
The result is devastating defeat.
The Ark is captured, Eli dies, and Israel realizes that God cannot be manipulated.
The Manly Training Lens
Grace invites us not only to believe in God but to listen to Him.
Samuel’s calling begins with a posture of humility. He does not assume he already understands everything. Instead, he learns to listen carefully when God speaks.
At the same time, Eli’s sons demonstrate the opposite posture. They hold positions of authority, but they ignore the responsibility that comes with knowing God.
Israel’s attempt to use the Ark reveals another important lesson. Faith cannot be reduced to symbols or rituals alone. Without genuine relationship with God, even sacred objects lose their meaning.
Here Christ is revealed as the perfect mediator between God and humanity. Samuel served as a prophet who spoke God’s word to the people. Christ fulfills this role completely—He is the Word made flesh who reveals God fully.
God wants His people to know Him personally and to develop hearts that listen carefully to His voice.
Leadership application becomes clear:
True leadership begins with the ability to listen to God.

Final Thought
Samuel’s simple response remains one of the most powerful prayers in Scripture:
“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”
In a world filled with noise and distraction, learning to listen to God becomes an act of spiritual strength.
Christ reveals the voice of God perfectly and invites us into relationship with Him.
Knowing Him shapes not only what we believe, but how we listen, respond, and live.
