Day 26 – God Makes Himself Known by Grace

The God who forgives reveals His heart so He may be known.

“The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.”
Exodus 34:6

The Tension We Feel

Exodus 34 opens after failure.

The covenant has been broken. Trust has been damaged. The tablets lie shattered at the base of the mountain. If we are honest, this is the moment we expect distance—withdrawal, silence, consequences without closeness.

Many of us know this feeling. After failure, we brace ourselves. We assume God will tolerate us at best, keep us at arm’s length, or require us to prove ourselves again.

That expectation is deeply human—and deeply wrong.

Who God Reveals Himself to Be

God does not hide.

Instead, He reveals His name. He proclaims His character. Before Moses asks anything, God tells him who He is: merciful, gracious, patient, faithful.

This is not abstract theology. This is self-disclosure. God wants to be known.

Here Christ is clearly foreshadowed. Jesus will later embody this very declaration. He is mercy in flesh. Grace with a face. The full revelation of the God who forgives and draws near.

What God proclaims on Sinai, Christ fulfills completely.

Grace Before Action

The covenant is renewed not because Israel performed better, but because God chose grace.

Only after forgiveness is reaffirmed does the work resume. The people return to building—not to earn God’s presence, but because His presence has been restored.

Grace always moves first. Obedience follows naturally when trust is rebuilt.

Formation Without Performance

Exodus 35–36 shows the people working willingly. Not under threat. Not in fear. But in response to grace.

Giving becomes joyful. Skill becomes service. Work becomes worship.

This is formation, not performance.

Strong lives are shaped when obedience flows from knowing God’s heart—not from pressure to fix past mistakes.

Closing Reflection

God is gracious.
Grace makes Him known.
And when we truly know Him, obedience becomes a response, not a burden.

We walk forward—not to regain favor—but because mercy has already met us.
