Becoming More Like Him

Why the Character of God Still Changes Everything

Main Verse:

“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory,
are being transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory.”
2 Corinthians 3:18

🕯️ Story / Illustration — The Sculptor’s Secret

A young apprentice once asked a master sculptor how he turned rough stone into such lifelike figures.
The sculptor smiled and said,

“I just chip away everything that doesn’t look like the man inside.”

That’s what God does with us.
He takes the unrefined parts—fear, pride, impatience—and gently carves away everything that doesn’t look like His Son.
It’s not punishment; it’s transformation.
It’s love in motion.

📖 Looking Back Before We Move Forward

Over the past year, we’ve spent time talking about the need for real change.
We’ve wrestled with how we speak, the power of our words, and the challenge of controlling the tongue.
We’ve sat with Solomon’s wisdom in Ecclesiastes, learning that life without God’s direction quickly becomes meaningless, no matter how successful it looks on the outside.

Those lessons have been shaping the foundation for what comes next.
Now, we’re turning the corner—from learning why change is necessary to discovering how God Himself changes us.
This new journey isn’t about polishing behavior; it’s about letting His character take root in our own.
It’s the next step in becoming who we were always meant to be.

💡 The Purpose of This Journey

We live in a world obsessed with speed, noise, and self-promotion, yet God still values depth, steadiness, and truth.
This year, we’ll slow down and learn to reflect His heart—not just admire it.

For the next 52 weeks, we’ll explore the character of God—one trait at a time.
His faithfulness, mercy, courage, humility, and love will become the blueprint for our growth.
Each week will ask two simple questions:

  1. What does this reveal about who God is?
  2. What does it require of me?

This isn’t about gathering more information; it’s about transformation.
When we focus long enough on who God is, His nature begins to reshape ours.

🪞 Why Character Still Matters

Talent opens doors, but only character keeps them open.
Success may impress people, but integrity transforms them.

The world doesn’t need louder voices—it needs steadier hearts.
People who stay kind when criticized, patient when pressured, and faithful when forgotten.
That kind of strength doesn’t come from motivation alone; it comes from walking daily with a God who never changes.

Each week, you’ll read an article and gather with others to discuss it.
You’ll practice one virtue—one small act of spiritual endurance—that forms the inner life of a disciple.

🧭 How to Engage

Here’s how to make the most of this journey:

  1. Read the weekly article on ManlyTraining.com and meditate on the Scripture.
  2. Meet with your small group to talk honestly about where that truth fits in your life.
  3. Write one short reflection in your Character Journal each week.
  4. Act on the weekly challenge—small steps of faith that build spiritual muscle.

This isn’t about perfection; it’s about showing up.
Every sunrise is proof that God hasn’t given up on you—so don’t give up on becoming who He created you to be.

🙏 Closing Thought

You are not beginning another Bible study.
You are stepping into a process—the lifelong art of becoming more like Jesus.
And just like the sculptor, God is patiently chipping away everything that doesn’t look like Him.

When the carving feels painful, remember:

“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” — Philippians 1:6

The masterpiece is already inside you.
This is the year we uncover it—together.
