We are beginning a new series in the book of Job. Even though Job is considered the oldest book in the Bible, its message is as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago. Why? Because it addresses one of life’s hardest questions: Why does a loving God allow good people to suffer?
People often say, “The only certain things in life are death and taxes.” I’d add a third: suffering. At some point, every one of us will face pain, loss, or disappointment that shakes our world and tests our faith. The question is: Will we be ready when that moment comes?
The book of Job tells the story of a man whose life was turned upside down, not because he was sinful or careless, but precisely because he was faithful. His experience offers powerful lessons for all of us—whether we’re parents, young adults, or grandparents—about trusting God when life doesn’t make sense.
Let’s begin with three key truths we learn from Job’s life.
I. The Devotion Job Had
Job wasn’t perfect, but he was devoted. Scripture describes him as blameless, upright, God-fearing, and one who shunned evil (Job 1:1). He had integrity in his relationship with God, his family, and his community.
He was also deeply invested in his family. He cared not just for their physical needs but also for their spiritual well-being, even offering sacrifices on their behalf (Job 1:4–5). Job’s example reminds us that devotion isn’t just about personal faith; it’s also about how we lead, serve, and care for others.
II. The Disasters Job Experienced
Despite his faithfulness, Job’s world collapsed. He lost his wealth, his children, his health, and even the support of his spouse (Job 1–2). In a matter of days, everything he valued was stripped away.
This may feel painfully familiar. Some of us know what it’s like to lose a job, to bury a loved one, to face serious illness, or to watch a relationship fall apart. Others may not have walked that road yet—but one day, suffering will touch all of our lives. No one is exempt from life’s trials.
III. The Decision Job Faced
Satan claimed that Job only trusted God because of his blessings. “Take it all away,” Satan said, “and he will curse You” (Job 1:9–11). That was the real test: Would Job cling to God in the storm, or would he turn away?
Job chose to worship. He said, “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21). Even when his wife urged him to give up, Job responded with faith (Job 2:10).
And that’s the same decision we face when life takes a turn for the worse. Will we curse God or bless Him? Will we walk by sight or walk by faith?
Trusting God isn’t always easy—especially when our circumstances seem to whisper, “God has abandoned you.” But faith reminds us of the truth: God is in control, God cares for us, and God can be trusted even when we don’t understand.
Final Encouragement
The story of Job is not just about suffering—it’s about faith that endures when everything else falls apart. And that same faith is available to us today.
When life takes a turn for the worse, don’t give up. Choose to trust God. It’s the right thing to do, the best thing to do, and the only path that leads to hope.
What about you? When suffering comes, will you turn away—or will you choose, like Job, to worship and trust the God who never lets go?
