The truth is that when we don’t have any children ourselves, we have a lot of opinions about how to raise them. We say things like, “my children will never do that!” And then, one day, we have egg all over our face, because our children do exactly that which we thought they would not do. I am no expert, I am just a father of three and I have walked a few steps into parenthood. So, let me first give you this important piece of advice.
I want you to be a dad. Don’t be ‘Mom’s assistant.’ There are many dads that take a backseat to parenting and let the mom be the One that does it all. First, that is not fair for your wife! She is already working harder that you ever have, sleeping less, and stressed more! When she married you, I am sure she thought that you were a manly man, a leader, a take charge kind of person. Don’t change that just because you now have children. Fathers have tons of skills that they never use at home. Don’t tell me that you run a landscaping business or a restaurant, but you can’t dress and feed a 4-year-old? Don’t tell me that you are a chef and can’t make food for your baby! Take it on! Spend time with your kids and have your own ideas about what they need. It won’t take away your manhood; it will give it to you. I did that. I spent more time with my kids. And I found out that I’m a pretty bad father. I make a lot of mistakes and half the time I don’t know what I’m doing. But my kids love me. Go figure!
