NATIONAL ADOPTION MONTH

We Weren’t Qualified, Either – By Susan Hamilton

We Weren’t Qualified, Either by Susan Hamilton – I don’t know ANYONE who has adopted or is an adopted family member, but my husband and I celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary last spring, and over the last few years have finally become able to laugh about our journey. I want to address National Adoption Month because no matter the shape, size, or color of your new family – God ordained it and it’s worth the trouble.

My Backstory – In a Nutshell

I

Our marriage wasn’t a first for either of us. After failed marriages, we had both been single parents for the previous 3 years. He was raising his 2 daughters and I was raising my 3 sons when we met, and neither of us came without significant baggage.

II

Three years prior to meeting the love of my life, I had spent 7 years in a violent marriage that at one point had landed me in a women’s shelter for a month. My sons were 5 and 3 when their father eventually died from the same drug and alcohol induced behavior that ended our marriage. For the 9 months before he died, we had finally become friends divorced between state lines. My sons and I attended his funeral and I proceeded to believe we were doing well in spite of our histories.

III

My current husband and I didn’t go to church, we never got premarital counseling. It never occurred to us that the nights my sons spent hidden behind the sofa or huddled under the bed as their dad threw insults, fits, furniture, and remote controls at me, would EVER be more than an unpleasant memory for them. The fact is, children exposed to abuse at young ages absorb things that we wish we could erase.

The Baggage

My husband’s previous marriage had baggage, too. His wife had been unfaithful, and he had been a workaholic – between them both, those precious baby girls had been fought for and won in a custody agreement that favored their father, primarily because he had supportive family, made good money, and could provide stability.

He didn’t, however, know much about how to shower young girls with appreciative attention, and we now know just how important it is to do so. Without it, they experience a dangerous craving for male attention that can steer them off course in some pretty major ways. He struggled with trust issues, and that also came into play during our early years. His ex disappeared, and that didn’t help.

Advice for Men

MEN, I cannot stress this enough. ADORE your young ladies with time and physical attention both to teach them they are fine china to be handled with extreme care and gentleness – and how to set up healthy boundaries –  and to teach your young men to do the same.

Without the benefit of a church home and new social relationships, we pretty much went at it alone. I don’t recommend it. The only thing we had going for us was a determination to NOT be counted among the expected 60% failure rate combined families face. After a busy and rocky start, we decided to recommit our marriage to Jesus Christ on our 10 year anniversary. Our kids were teenagers by then.

There Isn’t a Do-Over – but There IS Redemption

You’d think they’d have spent enough time in pseudo-normalcy to avoid the pitfalls of their young experiences, but we didn’t know to pray over them for the healing they needed, and we didn’t know we could speak life into them with the Word of God to build their faith OR ours.

Consequently, 4 of our kids have mug shots, and have had to rise from the ashes of addictions, assaults, and single parenting. The only one who didn’t go through those things has had to learn to forgive, and self-righteousness is its own hell. No one can measure up to the one who does it ‘right.’

Fact is, even though we had begun to go to church, we had no idea how to invoke the power made available to us over demonic influences through the precious blood of the lamb. His sacrifice meant SO much more than we knew!

It is Finished

Like many parents in the church today, we lived reactionary, not proactively. We begged God, “PLEASE do something!” God dealt with Paul about this, too. We don’t approach the “It is finished” work of Jesus half-believing it IS finished. That releases no faith at all. Once we learn this, we ARE truly strong in Divine Strength!

Instead of putting on the blessed armor of the Lord every morning, we had ‘disciplinary’ discussions and spent all our time trying to correct behavior according to the flesh.

Paul tells Timothy in his second letter that a victor doesn’t get the crown unless he runs according to the rules laid down. As citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven, we have an embassy, and embark as new creations doing more than Jesus did on this earth, right now, by following His example. Here are some take-aways you’ll find in the Gospels to support that claim:

Take-Aways

I

Speak things that be not as though they are. (She is not dead, only sleeping. Lazarus, arise! Open the fish’s mouth. YOU feed them, etc.)

II

Ask whatsoever you will and the Father is glorified to provide it, proving Jesus His Son in Whom He is well pleased. John, chapters 14-17.

III

You will have whatsoever you say when you don’t doubt it but believe in your heart – which incidentally, is where your Spirit Man watches and hears, so don’t grieve Him. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Mark 11, and various Psalms and Proverbs.

IV

If it doesn’t exist in heaven, you can bind it here. If it does exist in heaven, you can loose it here on earth. Spend more time loosing love, joy, freedom from bondage, divine health, abundance, peace – SHALOM – than binding, and over time you will see for yourself that you have what you focus on most! Mat 16.

V

You have the power and authority, just like Jesus, to forgive sins, heal, be compassionate, and provide for others through reliance on His authority and presence inside YOU. YOU, after all, were anointed with the Holy Spirit, too. Luke 4, John 16-17, Mat 9.

VI

From the days of the prophets until John the Baptist, the Kingdom of Heaven has endured violent assault, and the violent take it by force. You will have to get VERY firm with that mouth of yours, it’s your ONLY offensive weapon. His Words in YOUR mouth are irrefutable on this earth, invoking the laws of heaven over your circumstance. Mat 11.

VII

PRAY honoring the Father with your whole heart, and command that the kingdom come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Mat 5. PRAY He keep your foot from evil and protect you from the evil one. Jesus didn’t beg the Father, and neither should you. It’s far more honorable to approach His Majesty with a knowledge of His Will – that is how RELATIONSHIPS work – and if you have a copy of the scriptures, you have access to know what His will IS. The Holy Spirit leads you into ALL Truth – just how much Truth IS that?? If you haven’t done so, ask Holy Spirit to guide and reveal scripture Truth to you for your edification and preparation for each day in accordance with His will.

He Heals Us

Friends, He is a Rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. He created family and wants it to be a successful representation of the Kingdom of God to your neighborhood, community, and in business. That is not a place of poverty or failure, drug addiction, or incarceration, but of Psalm 23, Deuteronomy 28, and Isaiah 57.

We suffered significant failure and have seen the Lord be faithful and heal us. We now understand why we ‘live for the praise of His Glory.’ Ephesians.

I Dare You

When our expectations changed, our language changed, and manifestation happened, which increased our faith and grew our expectations. As this cycle continued, success ensued. My prayer is that you discover how to walk in victory, no matter who is bringing the baggage and what it tries to do to your family.

His ways are above our ways alright, but He told us to walk in His ways to have good success. Kick religion to the door, and go take back your families, neighborhoods and organizations for the Kingdom of God, I dare you to speak life and see what happens.

NATIONAL ADOPTION MONTH

North Texas Families Grow on National Adoption Day

North Texas families grow as they adopt children during National Adoption Month. Is it too late? Is there something you can do to help?

National Adoption Day on Friday was a day of celebration for families across the U.S., including here in North Texas.

13-year-old Nathan says he prayed the day would come that he would finally be adopted. But until Friday, it was only a dream. He was running out of time, and the future was dim.

However, it all changed when Nathan found a forever family with Steve and Monica Wood.

The 13-year-old has been in foster homes since he was 2 years old. But, never again.

“We just prayed for a while — me and my other roommate,” he recalled. “And we were just praying and talked about what would it be like to have a family.”

The Story

Steve Wood is the head football coach at Aledo High School. Over the years, he’s mentored hundreds of young players. Nathan moved there to be with his new parents and now plays football in middle school.

“He had a smile on his face. You could tell he was happy to meet us, which meant a lot to us,” Steve recalled.

Sixty adoptions were finalized in one day at the Gladney Center for Adoption in Fort Worth. The Woods already have two children who are away at college, but they have plenty of love for another child.

Who are They?

Nathan was the oldest child officially adopted on Friday.

“This is going to be my child,” Monica said. “This is my son you’re saying hello for the first time, and he’s 13.”

3-month-old Judah was the youngest child in the group of adoptions. Ryan and Sarah Tew will keep an open relationship with his birth mother. They say it’s best for their new son.

“When he asks, ‘Tell me about the day I was born?’ We’re telling him stories about how we first met him. These are realities and conversations we’re always going to have with him,” Ryan said. “He’ll know he’s adopted. We’re very proud of that.”

As for the older kids, the Gladney Center says they age out of the foster home system at 18 years old. After that, they’re on their own. About 64 percent end up homeless or in jail by the time they’re 20 years old.

Celebrate November as Adoption Awareness Month

DCFS Celebrates November as Adoption Awareness Month
DCFS Celebrates November as Adoption Awareness Month

The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and community partners will host events throughout the state during November to raise awareness about adoption and celebrate another record-setting year for the number of foster children who found permanent homes.

A Declaration Celebrate November as Adoption Awareness Month

Gov. John Bel Edwards declared November to be Adoption Awareness Month, noting that 764 children in Louisiana’s foster care system had found loving, permanent homes with 528 adoptive families between Oct. 1, 2016, and Sept. 30, 2017.

The previous record for the number of Louisiana adoptions finalized in one year was in FFY 2016, when 735 foster children were adopted by 532 families.

“We are thrilled that so many families have stepped up to provide the permanent, loving support our children need. Adoption is about more than providing a home. It’s about providing a permanent sense of place and belonging, and the security of knowing that no matter what life throws at you, these people – your family – will have your back,” said DCFS Secretary Marketa Garner Walters.

A Dedication to Celebrate November as Adoption Awareness Month

DCFS will dedicate the month of November to honoring those who have made a difference in a child’s life. A difference through adoption. Raising awareness in an effort to provide homes for about 140 children who remain in need of a permanent, adoptive home.

DCFS will host its annual statewide adoption celebration with new adoptive families and present statewide adoption advocate awards at the Governor’s Mansion on November 16. Regional staff are partnering with community organizations and local officials to host adoption celebrations in each of the nine DCFS regions across the state. These events include family reunion-style barbecues, fairs and balloon releases for families who have adopted within the past year, as well as adoption finalization ceremonies and receptions on and around National Adoption Day, November 18.

A record of 764 children were adopted out of foster care over the past year.

My Feedback For Others After Parenting My Son With Attachment Disorders

My Feedback For Others After Parenting My Son With Attachment Disorders

It is National Adoption Month, a time that is used to bring awareness to the struggles and successes associated with adopting a child. Along with adoption comes awareness of another difficult consequence that can come hand in hand with that topic: attachment disorder.

When They Just Don’t Bond

My Feedback For Others After Parenting My Son With Attachment Disorders
My Feedback For Others After Parenting My Son With Attachment Disorders

This is a very personal issue for me. I tried to learn how to be a dad from my own father. When I learned that my son had an attachment disorder, I wasn’t sure how to apply those lessons he had given me to my own situation. Like so many children who also suffer from similar conditions, he has always had difficulty connecting with my wife and myself.

Where most young children love to cuddle and hug, my son couldn’t stand being touched. Where most infants are soothed by the bouncing of a car or the roll of a stroller, my son became restless and agitated.

I read a story from a journalist who wrote a book on her experience with her daughter, Julia. Adopted from a Siberian orphanage, the neglect Julia faced from the time of birth led to her shying away from human contact as young as 18 months.

So much of what the author described was similar to what I had seen in my child. The disruptive behavior, the aversion to affection, the lack of eye contact, the inability to cooperate with others, the acting out…I have gone through it all with my precious boy.

What Causes Attachment Disorders?

Attachment disorders are poorly understood and it isn’t known why some children have symptoms and others do not. However, what we do know is that an attachment disorder is formed when a child has not had consistent, loving interaction with a caregiver through their developmental years.

For some, this means they were abandoned by their parents. For others, they were isolated from a consistent caregiver, such as those in orphanages around the world, or foster care locally. Abuse and extreme trauma can also become factors in developing these conditions.

What I Have To Say To Struggling Parents

It gets better. Not right away and it can be a frustrating, even terrifying process. But with firm, consistent love, affection and patience your child will begin to bond with you and others. Being a good parent and expressing your feelings to your child will go a long way into allowing them to heal from their past trauma, whatever it may be.

NATIONAL ADOPTION MONTH

What Adoption Means – Spiritual definition – by Sandra Cerda

During my 1st year in pastoral ministry, an opportunity to learn about Fatherless Homes in America, and the devastating effects it had on children across the country, presented itself.  In the form of an invitation from The Washington Post and Jerry Falwell, I found myself flying to Washington D.C. for a week of Conference style meetings.  I came away, after meeting with Senators and other public speakers for a week, heading back to Texas with purpose in my heart to reach young people facing similar circumstances and setbacks.  I quickly learned what spiritual adoption truly meant. Never before had I been made aware of the devastation imposed on America’s children, and worsened only by the absence of a mother.

Set Apart

November is National Adoption Awareness Month in the United States of America.  The word “adoption” alone is a seemingly set-apart label, even if unintentional.  It signifies by description the life of one who has been left alone; of one who has not been claimed, and of one who does not belong. Although harsh as it sounds, it is one of the stigma’s identifying people among us, who have suffered varying degrees of isolation, rejection, and have often found themselves feeling the void of the place called “adoption”.

Spiritual Adoption

For nearly four years, after my trip to Washington, D.C., our team worked tirelessly to reach nearly 400 young at-risk youth every Friday night with a message of love and acceptance, in the family of God.  Another form of adoption, or spiritual adoption, is found in the welcoming arms of a loving church and church family; a strong place where relief, stability and accountability that forms a healthy foundation for life can be experienced.  These children were not orphaned, in the sense that there were no parents, but in their relationship with the Lord, there was need for adoption, or engrafting into the family of God.

God Himself Adopts Us

Adopted. Another word for engrafted. Absorbed. Meshed and ‘made as one’ with the host family. Great attempts and laborious amounts of heartfelt effort goes into Formal Adoptions, through our current legal system. Much hope and prayer from everyone involved, especially the children who are of the age of understanding, has gone into each personal journey on that path. Having to face the fear of “hope deferred,” for multitudes, has left its mark etched on many a callous heart.  Callous only for being hardened against such heart wrenching difficulties. For many the road never quite comes to an end.  For the most part, there is healing in life but for those who carry the pain of not belonging, there is a place reserved by the Father called Adoption! God Himself adopts us into His heart of compassion and family of love.

It Touched My Heart

Of the many definitions to the word adoption, one came through closest to touching my heart.  “The act or process of giving official acceptance or approval to something.” Odd how the simple defining of this word seemed to have a tough time, too; imagine the person whose life is in the process of being adopted. Imagine the person, passed over again, who’s not.

In this November’s highlight of National Adoption Awareness Month, my hope is that a warmer, more embracing and open dialogue of encouragement would comfort those on the journey. Also, that the journey would be less harsh, more simplified where possible, with much more happy results for all involved.

Almost 4,000 Children are Waiting for Adoption in Texas

Texas Adoption

Almost 4,000 children are waiting for adoption in Texas
Almost 4,000 children are waiting for adoption in Texas

Nearly 4,000 children are waiting to be adopted in Texas, a statistic advocates are highlighting in November for National Adoption Month.

About 30 children spent the night in a Child Protective Services office in Travis County. They did so because they didn’t have a place to go. Travis County Judge Darlene Byrne said many children are waiting up to two years to find a place with a family. Therefore, the need for foster families is always present. As of Wednesday in Austin, 119 children were waiting for foster homes.

The children shouldn’t be waiting,” Byrne said. “The families should be waiting.”

She hopes someday the statistics will be flipped, with more foster families willing to take in children than there are children who need them. However, there has been a shift recently — about 2/3 of children end up with relatives.

Let’s Find Someone

“There’s a big push to find aunts and uncles and cousins and godparents to come and step forward for their own biological family members and support those who are a little less fortunate and can’t raise their children safely,” Byrne said.

At various days throughout the month, courthouses around the state will hold adoption days to celebrate those children who find their forever home. Courthouses transform into wonderfully-decorated themes and there’s cake and other celebrations once the judge makes an adoption official.

People who want to get involved or learn more about adoption or foster care can go to the Texas Adoption Resource Exchange website.

Your pledge will help me continue to put the considerable time and effort into each and every post that makes Manly Training what it is.

So thank you from the bottom of my heart. I pray every day for each and every one of you who take the time to read my words. You are a blessing.

Thank You!
