2 Things a Fly can Teach You

You may think that this is weird, but let me tell you that there are 2 things a fly can teach you. Don’t be so proud as to shrug this off, your life may change forever if you listen to the fly!

Ecclesiastes 10:1“Dead flies in perfume make it stink, And a little foolishness decomposes much wisdom.”

The Picture of the fly

I took this picture of this summer TEXAS fly last summer. I was tired of this fly buzzing around my head so I took a fly swatter and struck that fly as it was still in mid air. Then, I looked around to pick up the dead fly and throw it away just to find that it had landed on my napkin! I’ve never taken a close up picture of a fly before, but I had these new camera lenses and I thought, “why not?”

Now, this fly got me thinking about a few things. You see, the fly was being very annoying. You know, the kind of fly that just keeps flying by your face and lands on your plate! Then, when you shoo it away, it lands on the exact same place where it was before or it will land on your ear or nose! This fly had NO moderation whatsoever. It was going to do what it was going to do or it was going to die in the process.

It’s Ok, Right?

Some people are like that too. Some people have no moderation at all and they become as annoying as that fly was. Their pursuit of pleasure will end up being their ruin. They will pursue their addiction or their habit or they will die in the process. And then there are some people who will use moderation. Moderation is good, isn’t it?

Nowadays, there are people who will tell you that nothing is a sin if it is done with moderation. They will say that it’s not wrong to act a certain way, or do a certain thing if it only affects you. They will tell you that if it doesn’t hurt anyone else then it’s okay to do whatever your conscious will allow you to do.

Moderation is OK, right?

Moderation is a common misunderstanding that many people get caught up in. You see, they see moderation as protection. consequently, if I say that I do something in moderation, then somehow, that makes it acceptable. If I tell you or even tell myself that there is a limit or a line in the sand that marks how far I am willing to go, then I am doing it in “moderation” and that is okay. But that is just not the case. Too many times we see young people caught up in the moderation movement, only to find themselves full blown alcoholics, drug users, addicted to pornography and sex and the list goes on.

Many people believe is that if you can control it, then it’s o.k. The vivid picture of a fly in perfume or in a bowl of soup becomes more and more grotesque the more you think about it.

What One Fly can do!

How can it be that one fly can infect an entire perfume. God uses this illustration to represent the choices we make in our lives. All it takes is one wrong choice in purity, friendships, values, honesty and other moral decisions. All it takes is that one bad decision and it will lead to an infection in all the other areas of your life.

Just one wrong choice can lead to one of two things:

I

First, it can lead to an immediate penalty! Take a look around at the many people you come in contact with. Some people at work and at school will complain about the things in their lives that are going wrong. Yet it’s easy to tell if the consequences they are dealing with are a direct result of an action they took.

How about yourself. What issues are you dealing with today that are a direct result of a decision you made.

  • Things like sexually transmitted diseases are immediate.
  • Teenage pregnancy or pregnancy out of wedlock are all immediate and can have serious repercussions on your life.
  • Some drug habits can be traced to a single shot of substance.

II

Second, there are delayed penalties. Things such as addictions.

There are immediate consequences and then some consequences are delayed. We think we get away with them for a season but the Bible say’s, “surely your sins will find you out”.

Many people today live their lives on credit. You think you have gone your own way, rejecting God, and it would appear that there have been no consequences.

Just wait!

Some penalties are delayed. We may not see them now, but they will catch up to you. And let me tell you that THE CONSEQUENCES are always worse than the initial decision.

Now What?

So what are we to do? How can we save ourselves from such terrible consequences and learn to make the right choices in life? How can we keep the fly out of our bowl of soup or jar of perfume? Where do we obtain such wisdom. The answer is found in Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Let me tell you that God wants you to learn to make right choices. All you have to do is ask. If you lack wisdom, ask God!

James 1:5 “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

For the Young Ones!

If you are young, you are in time to keep yourself from the heartache and the pain that comes with the consequences of bad choices. For young men and young ladies who are reading this piece, I want you to know that your youth is a treasure that you must cherish for it will be gone in a blink of an eye. It is in the strength of your youth, in the stubbornness of the early years of your life that you must honor and enjoy God.

Ecclesiastes 12:1-2 “Honor and enjoy your Creator while you’re still young, Before the years take their toll and your vigor wanes, Before your vision dims and the world blurs And the winter years keep you close to the fire.”

It’s Not too Late

However, whether you are young or old or anywhere in between, it is never too late to honor God and enjoy being His son or daughter. It is never too late to learn how to make the right choices in life so you may keep those pesky flies out of your bowl of soup or your jar of perfume.

Therefore, remember this, God tells us to keep ourselves pure. I am speaking to every man, woman and child reading this article. Christian or not, you were created by God for a purpose and you will not fulfill your purpose unless you keep yourself pure. The shame and guilt alone will stop you.

There are very real consequences that every man, woman and child will face. There are spiritual consequences and physical consequences and these consequences will affect your family and your friends.

Therefore, make the right choices. Remember that RIGHT CHOICES make us stronger, and happier.

Choices

And what is the right choice? I urge you to simply start by following the choices God has made for you.

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭3:3-12‬ ‭ “Don’t lose your grip on Love and Loyalty. Tie them around your neck; carve their initials on your heart. Earn a reputation for living well in God’s eyes and the eyes of the people.

Trust GOD from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for GOD’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to GOD! Run from evil! Your body will glow with health, your very bones will vibrate with life! Honor GOD with everything you own; give him the first and the best. Your barns will burst, your wine vats will brim over. But don’t, dear friend, resent GOD ’s discipline; don’t sulk under his loving correction. It’s the child he loves that GOD corrects; a father’s delight is behind all this.”
